The Town Plaza Medical Clinic in Whistler provides health care services to residents and visitors seven days a week. In addition to general practice and family medicine, the clinic also provides urgent care, minor emergency services, counselling, travel medicine (including immunizations), prenatal & baby care, and occupational health care.

No appointment necessary; Mon to Sat 9a-5:30p, Sun 10a-4p.

Surrey Community Services’ team of professional counsellors offers free counselling with specialization in:

  • Family Counselling (by MCFD or Youth Mental Health referral only)
  • Suicide Prevention, Education and Counselling (19-and-under, self-referral okay)
  • Sexual Abuse Counselling (children/youth plus non-offending family, abuse must have been reported with no current contact with offender, self-referral okay)

This service is for residents of Surrey, White Rock and Langley.


West Coast Wellness Group

West Coast Wellness Group is a small group of counsellors working in a private practice model. They are committed to having a generous sliding scale and to keeping some slots free to take clients on the low end of that scale. They are experienced counsellors with areas of specialty in counselling individuals, couples, families, groups and youth. Appointment times are flexible, with the possibility of evenings. It is a division of Jewish Family Services Agency.

Provides free individual counselling and referrals for young women. Also offers various group programming on assertiveness, parenting and employment assistance.

    Their programs specifically for youth include:

    • Aboriginal Mentorship program for aboriginal girls (12 to 17)
    • Boys 4 Real /Welcome to My Life - Seven week after-school programs for Grade 7 boys and girls, respectively
    • Camp Fun Girl One-week day summer camps for girls (9 to 13)
    • High School one-to-one Mentorship for girls in Grades 11and 12
    • Youth Jobseekers - Job postings, career advice, resources and employment centre info for young women 15 to 30!

    Sources BC (formerly Peace Arch Community Services) provides numerous support groups, self-help meetings and programs including addictions, employment services for adults and youth, information and referrals, and counselling services to individuals and families in the Surrey and White Rock area.

    Services include:

    • Community Living – life skills training, community kitchens, social clubs and other daytime programming
    • Youth Services – a 1-on-1 youth justice program, FASD-related support for parents and families, and some counselling for youth with mental health diagnoses and their families
    • Family Services – counselling, though referrals must come through MCFD.
    • Drug & Alcohol support – Individual counselling, psych-educational groups and referral
    • A food bank
    • and much much more.

    Family and Youth Services Society (FAYSS) in Langley BC has merged with Aldergrove Neighbourhood Services Society (ANSS).  As of fall 2011, they are still providing most of the same services as listed below, but please check with them to verify.

    Services include:

    • Parent-Teen Mediation – Short-term outreach counselling and conflict mediation for families in crisis, more specifically with youth 12-19, in order to help prevent family breakdown and the need for kids to be taken into care by MCFD.
    • Functional Family Therapy – Longer-term (8-30 sessions) therapy with youth, 12-19, and their families.
    • Sexual Abuse Support Services – Professional counselling to children and youth who have experienced sexual abuse and their non-offending family members. Unless the offender is a peer, the abuse must have been reported to police and/or MCFD.

    Richmond Youth Clinic

    Provides free, confidential health education, counselling, and clinical services to young people residing in Richmond. Deals with specific health concerns such as sexually transmitted infections, pregnancy, family planning, and nutrition. MSP coverage is required. Hours and location vary:

    • Tuesdays, 2-4pm – At the East Richmond Hall, 12360 Cambie Rd., drop-in or by appointment.
    • Mon. & Wed., 3:30-5:30pm – At Richmond Place, 8100 Granville Ave., drop-in or by appointment.
    • Fridays, 1-4pm – At Richmond Place, 8100 Granville Ave., by appointment only.

    Youth Space

    Youthspace offers online support to British Columbian youth. They provide an online live chat service and forum discussion board, as well as a way to connect to a professional e-counsellor.

    The live chat is open every day (except Wednesday), 6pm to 11pm, and can be accessed here.

    The NEED Crisis Line is now closed, unfortunately. You can call the Vancouver Island Crisis Line for service (1-888-494-3888).

    MCFD is, broadly, the provincial ministry holding the responsibility for the well-being of children and their healthy development. They are probably best known for providing child protection and supervising substitute care (like foster care and group homes), but also provide services for children with special needs, child and youth mental health, youth justice, and early childhood development programs and services.

Youth Services promotes the personal growth and career development of young people through a wide variety of programs ranging from the volunteer buddy program, youth volunteer group, youth counselling, to leadership training, employment and entrepreneurial development. Youth services are delivered by different departments in S.U.C.C.E.S.S. Services can be offered in Mandarin and Cantonese.
