CARE stands for Comprehensive Abortion and Reproductive Education, and is a service run out of the BC Women’s Hospital. They offer an array of caring, professional and confidential services around abortion & reproductive education including:

  • Counselling services, both for emotional support and information around pregnancy options, including abortion and birth control
  • The Pregnancy Options Line, an information and referral service to help women make informed choices around pregnancy: 604-875-3163 or (toll-free) 1-888-875-3163.
  • Medical services, including abortion, tubal ligation and birth control.

LOVE’s programs are designed to help youth overcome the challenge of violence in their lives and develop the skills to become local leaders against violence. LOVE volunteers learn to use their personal experiences with gangs, drugs, weapons, racism, bullying, domestic violence and self-harm to help other youth make positive choices and together build safer communities.

BC’s chapter of LOVE is run out of the Broadway Youth Resource Centre. If you’re interested in volunteering, please contact them at the number above.

SFU Health Promotion

Simon Fraser University’s Health and Counselling Services offers services to address both the physical and mental health of the school’s students. Clinics, vaccinations, counselling and physiotherapy are all available to currently enrolled students.

In addition, the department’s Health Promotion section also features some excellent web-based resources:

The Youth Centre is a drop-in centre that hosts activities for youth 13-18. The Rachel Ann and Sarah Mae Rockowitz Youth Centre in the lower floor of Millennium Place has ping pong, a pool table, TV/VCR, Playstation, Nintendo, Internet access, the occasional affordable dinner night and tons of related activities.

The drop-in is open Wed. & Thurs. 3:30pm-8pm, Fri. 3:30pm-11pm and Sat. 6pm-10pm.

HealthLink BC provides 24-hour, confidential non-emergency health information and advice. Registered nurses available to speak to you 24 hours a day; pharmacists available from 5pm-9am every day, and dietitians from 9am-5pm M-F.

You will be asked for your Personal Health Number, but you will NOT be denied service if you don’t provide it. You can ask nurses any questions regarding health topics or procedures, identify symptoms and get help deciding when you need to see a health professional. Translation services are available.

This service combines several resources formerly known separately as: BC Nurse Line, Dial-A-Dietitian, Pharmacist After Hours, and BC HealthGuide

Redwire Native Youth Society

Redwire is “a collective of Native youth creating uncensored spaces for youth to find their own voice.” Up until recently, they published Redwire Magazine, an uncensored forum for Native youth to find, discuss and share their voice. Currently, they are focusing on creating online resources with workshops and projects in video and podcasting. They are “a media and arts organization dedicated to the power and healing of unhindered expression.

They are incorporated as the Redwire Native Youth Media Society.

Provides free, confidential, anonymous counselling over the phone 24/7, or via questions posted online, to young people up to age 20. Website provides space to share stories and connect with other youth, as well as a Topic Library about common issues and concerns facing children and youth.
