Bipolar Disorder
-sometimes referred to as manic depression
- causes unusual shifts in a person’s mood, energy, and ability to function
-this is a disorder in which there are periods of serious depression followed by periods of markedly elevated or irritable moods (referred to as “mania”)
-these mood swings aren’t necessarily related to what’s going on in a person’s life
-bipolar disorder typically starts in late adolescent or early adulthood
-not known what causes it, but it can be treated
-tends to run in families and drug abuse or stressful/traumatic events may contribute to or trigger episodes
-Bipolar disorder is treatable
-majority of people respond to treatment and most who seek this out will get some relief from their symptoms
-medication and some forms of counseling or psychoterhapy have been shown to help-VERY important to seek help and to be clear with medical professional about all symptoms
-there is help available!
Symptoms of Depression:
-feeling worthless, helpless, hopeless
-sleeping more or less than usual
-eating more or less than usual
-difficulty concentrating or making decisions
-loss of interest
-decreased sex drive
-avoiding others
-overwhelming feelings of sadness or grief
-strong feelings of guilt
-loss of energy
-thoughts of death or suicide
Symptoms of Mania:
-feelings of euphoria, exaggerated self-esteem
-extreme irritability
-unreasonable optimism or poor judgement/reckless behaviour
-hyperactivint or racing thoughts
-talkativeness, sometimes becoming incoherent
-decreased sleep
-short attention span
-rapid shifts to rage or sadness
